Photo Album

These photos were taken at Hawaiian Kava Center's nursery division in December 2001, Kahalu'u. They were taken in the early morning hours using a Hasselblad 500 c/m with 80mm lens, Ektachrome E100S, and scanned using a Powerlook 1100.

Klaus is being very careful about leaf selection - choosing undamaged, whole leaf and half-open leaf buds.  This Hawaiian kava variety is known as kumakua.

Here a sample of the Hiwa Hawaiian kava variety is being taken.

This Hawaiian kava variety, discovered in a remote valley on O'ahu, has not been identified or lacks consensus on its name. HKC has provided propagules to other kava farmers and collectors on O'ahu and Hawai'i islands. It looks like the familiar Hiwa but tends to put out a lighter, not darker, coloration on its stems. Perhaps through Klaus' research, a better characterization can be obtained.

Amidst several Hawaiian kava varieties... Stay tuned for the results.
